A subtlety rogue tips and tricks video updated for the 4.2 patch, as well as a mention about the upcoming 4.3 patch. I’m going to say right now that I am not a pro, so if you are here to see a real pro doing arena, then you may just want to take a look at this link: www.youtube.com in some of the footage you also see me clicking a bit, particularly fan of knives at one point in the video. I am a former clicker but these days I only ever have to click Vanish and Preparation (and Cloak of Shadows but it is built into a few macros that do have key bindings so it really doesn’t matter). This video is completely based around spec and build, as well as a few tips and tricks. Although there are a few mentions on rotation, it isn’t what this video is about. As much as I would like to just include it, Sub rogues have no real rotation. They do whatever the situation calls for, and what that should be is up to you using your better judgement. “My two greatest passions growing up were always video games and music,” recalls the 43-year-old musician from his home in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. “This allows me to put them together with a symphonic performance. I like to say Video Games Live has all the power and emotion of a symphony, combined with the energy and excitement of a concert, mixed with the technology, interactivity and fun of video games. Plus I get to go onstage, play guitar and rock out.”

Rocking out actually runs in Tallarico’s family; his first cousin is singer Steven Tallarico. You might know him as Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and American Idol. But neither of them can match the bombastic spectacle of VGL, which features a full orchestra, giant video screens, costumed characters and lasers.

With Tallarico and co. powering up for another Canadian tour this month, he filled me in on his nerdy roots, cousin Steven and why Beethoven might be writing for World of Warcraft.

Did you always want to be a video game composer?

Well, there was no such thing as a video game composer when I was growing up in the ’70s. But when I was 10 years old, I used to get my dad’s big old cassette player and take it down to the arcade and record all my favourite video game music. And I would record the sound of the games on my home systems — my Commodore 64, my Apple II, my Intellivision and my Atari. I would splice it all together and invite my friends over and charge them a nickel to watch me jump up in front of the TV with my favourite video games behind me and play along with the tape.

So you found a way to make video games even nerdier.

I know (laughs). It’s hard to believe.

Is your career just revenge on your parents for telling you to stop wasting time playing games?

No, they were really supportive. They really encouraged it. I would play Intellivision for hours with my mom, and my dad always took me to the arcade. They were just as addicted as I was. But my mom still says to me to this day: ‘When are you going to get a real job?’

Are there different challenges and rewards to scoring a video game versus a film?

Absolutely. The differences are massive. Films and television are about telling a story through words. When you score a film, you’re scoring underneath people talking. You’ll get one or two action scenes and the big main title theme — any composer will tell you that’s their favourite part, because the music is out front — but for the most part, film music is background music. But with video games, you get to write an action scene for every level. I call what we do foreground music. If you go see a movie and then watch it again on DVD, you’ve heard the music twice, and 80% of it was being talked over. But with a video game, people are playing 20 or 30 hours a week and the music is constantly being blasted. That’s why I think that if Beethoven were alive today, he’d be a video game composer. He wouldn’t be a film composer. He wouldn’t want people talking over his music.

What was it like growing up with Steven Tyler as a cousin?

Well, he was always on the road. But I would see him every couple of years. We would go backstage at Aerosmith shows or I’d sit at the side of the stage. For me it was always an inspiration. Even as a kid, I never doubted music was something I could do. If cousin Steven is doing it, I can do it. Most people think it’s unattainable. To me it was just a really cool job.

Was he also an example of what not to do at times?

Absolutely. I’ve never drunk alcohol or taken drugs. I’ve never even smoked. I don’t know if that’s due to him, but I can remember times in the late ’70s when I was backstage and he was quite frankly zonked out on stuff. And it scared me. I’ve never touched that stuff. And I’m proud to say that.

How do you think he’s doing on American Idol?

I never watched it before this year, so I have nothing to compare it to. And maybe I’m completely biased, but I think Steven’s stealing the show. But that’s just Steven. He’s not putting on an act. Steven Tyler — or Steven Tallarico, as I call him — is a guy who loves being famous. He loves the fans. He appreciates it every single day.

Everyone in gaming knows that Blizzard is pretty damn good at keeping their cards quite close to their chests. If they want to keep something under wraps then you’d better believe that the gaming public won’t hear about it until Blizzard want them to.

Therefore, armed with nothing other than guesswork and a love of speculation, here’s our predictions on what major news we could see break at Blizzcon 2011.

Naturally, this is the big one that people want to hear. Blizzard are notorious for not announcing a game’s release date until they are perfectly happy that they can deliver on it. This creates the double-edged sword situation for us gamers where we don’t hear about a game’s release for literally years but once the announcement is made, you can rely on it.

In the previous Blizzcon’s running up to this one, the major Diablo 3 announcements have revolved around the introduction of the game’s different classes. However, all 5 classes have been revealed, along with the real-cash Auction House and other major features of the game.

With the Diablo 3 beta live and running, there really is very little left to announce other than the big day itself.

Late July 2010 saw StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty melt faces and expectations as the long awaited sequel to the 1999 RTS classic rocketed forth from Blizzard to become an instant global triumph.

Blizzard’s decision to split StarCraft 2 into three component parts, one for each of the game’s factions, caused a lot of grumbling as some fans thought they were being strung out for 3 purchases when one would have sufficed. However, after the Wings of Liberty release, few of the grumblers could maintain their protest that the game had short-changed them, not with a straight face anyway.

Now, almost 15 months down the line, we’re ready for round 2 with the Zerg orientated chapter: StarCraft 2: Heart of The Swarm . As usual with Blizzard, details are sparse, with little known of the single player campaign’s overall plot and the units we can expect to lead into battle.

While I’m not predicting a release date to drop into our laps, it would be great to expand on our knowledge of the game, leading on from theteasers and short previewsthat have kept StarCraft 2 fans on a slow drip-feed of information.

Though you never can tell how long it will take for Blizzard to release a product, one area that carries a little more predictability is World of Warcraft . Each expansion has followed the pattern of being announced at Blizzcon in order to be released approximately one year later.

The Burning Crusade was announced in October at Blizzcon 2005 for a release just over a year later in January 2007, Wrath of the Lich King was announced at Blizzcon 2007 in preparation for a November 2008 release and finally Cataclysm was announced at Blizzcon 2009 and was released in December 2010.

Therefore, it doesn’t take a mage buffed with arcane brilliance to guess that the next expansion should logically be announced at Blizzcon 2011 in order to lay the ground for a late 2012 release date.

While this is by no means certain, it’s about as good a guess as you can get with the Blizzard development cycle.

Ah, theelusive Project Titan !Blizzard’s next major MMO has now been in the works for a couple of years, but almost nothing is known about it outside of the rumor-proof bunker that is Blizzard HQ.

All we know is that Project Titan is “Blizzard’s most ambitious project to date” and that a number of senior guys from the World of Warcraft team have been moved over to its development. Pretty thin stuff, even for Blizzard.

Unfortunately, I doubt that this state of secrecy is going to change any time soon. With World of Warcraft still performing well, there’s really very little pressure for Blizzard to generate any kind of hype for a new MMO yet, especially since Titan ’s release is likely to be several years away.

For you lucky few who will be attending Blizzard’s blowout yearly convention, I hope you have an absolute blast this weekend.

Even for poor mortals like myself who can’t be at the actual event, the handy-dandy e-ticket means that we can still catch the action and big announcements as they happen. So I’ll be frantically trying to write up posts on the highlights of Blizzcon 2011 while watching it unfold across Anaheim, so tune in to Gnews this weekend for that.
